SUMMARY:Ayan Duo Viola & Piano Ensemble Concert
DESCRIPTION:Ayan Duo\, formed at Temple University by violist Julia Kuzmina and pianist Yanzhima\nTsybikova\, is united by a shared Siberian heritage and a love for expressive storytelling through\nmusic. Known for their warmth and energy\, they strive to create a close connection with their\naudience by sharing the stories and insights behind the music. For this evening at the\nTrinity@22\, the duo explores Russian\, Argentinian\, and contemporary American works. \nAyan Duo\, violinist/violist Julia Kuzmina and pianist Yanzhima Tsybikova\, formed their\nensemble in 2023 while studying chamber music with the renowned pianist Lambert Orkis at\nTemple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance. The name Ayan holds special cultural\nmeaning in the Khakass and Buryat languages of Siberia\, where it is associated with “journey\,”\n“path\,” or “destiny.” For the duo\, the name reflects both their shared Siberian heritage and their\nartistic journey — a musical path that brought them from their early training in Russia to\ncollaborative work in the United States. It symbolizes movement\, connection\, and the unfolding\nof a creative destiny through chamber music. Born in Siberia\, Russia\, Julia and Yanzhima\nreceived their early musical training at some of Russia’s most prestigious institutions\, shaping\ntheir disciplined and expressive approach to performance. Their collaboration is rooted in a\nshared musical background and a strong commitment to ensemble performance. Their\nrepertoire ranges from violin–piano sonatas\, including works by César Franck and Maurice\nRavel\, to viola–piano duets by Johannes Brahms\, Paul Hindemith\, and Rebecca Clarke\,\nreflecting their versatility and interest in both traditional and expanded chamber literature. In\n2025\, both musicians were recipients of the Donald Spieth Memorial Award as members of the\nMeridian Quintet.
